t's no secret: A fast-paced
schedule is commonplace
for construction at Target
stores. And the retail expan-
tion
sion and major facelift of the
Jantzen Beach Target SuperCenter in Portland, Ore., was
no different. Included in the
significant expansion were
the addition of restaurants, a
grocery store and adequate
parking lot, which called
for 130,000 square feet of
ground-up, new construction.

Target expansion
By Joe York
To complete such a job, construction
partners must be fully prepared to hit the
ground running when they are selected. This
includes having the ability to fulfill the need
for extra resources and change requests as
they arise with no delays.
Skanska was the general contractor
on the project, which in turn, hired MCG
Commercial (Clackamas, Ore.) as its trusted
source. Having 15 other Target remodels under
its belt, MCG was brought on board for interior
contracting, which included drywall, structural
steel framing and acoustical ceiling.
And here's the catch: All interior work
had to be completed within an extraordinarily tight deadline of just two months.
MCG Commercial began in 2003 under
the guidance of Doug McClain. The company's initial focus was on all things interior
– drywall, steel stud framing, and taping
and acoustical ceilings. In order to expand,
it turned to automation, which enabled it
to grow and still maintain its high level of
service to its customers. For MCG, the key
was OnCenter Software solutions, which
helped deliver the right approach with a
focus on remedying construction pain points
and improving bottom-line results.
