CCR: What type of trends are you seeing out there today? Rick Hall, Beam Team: We're starting to see more retailers do the store within a store (shop within a shop) concept. Best Buy received a lot of with its Samsung program. We actually did three or four of its stores, where we went in and shrunk the store size down to two-thirds the size of what it was. And now, people want to come in and do the concept with them but they don't have enough space. We've gotten some calls to do the same type of things with Macy's, so we're starting to see more of this. In some ways, these stores are becoming showrooms. The consumers come in, look around, try stuff out (or on), and then go home and buy it online for a better price. Brick and mortar stores are going to have to adapt to these changes. I mean these changes are going to have to take place or brick and mortar may not survive. Ron Stupi, Quality Project Manage- ment: Whether it's a store within a store, I think it's that retailers are trying to figure out a way to get more sales within the same or often less square footage. In some cases, they are remodeling their stores through re-merchandising or doing store in store concepts. For example, if you're Verizon Wireless, you may add more accessories, remodel your stores, or sell merchandise you didn't carry before. From our perspective, we expect more construction that's from the ground up, which we still do quite a bit of, but less than we used to. But 70 percent of our work is remodels that somehow enhance the in-store experience for customers, whether it's new materials, goods, signs, lighting, flooring, or fixtures. Stephen Gallant, Joseph A Bank: Our internet business is growing, but it doesn't take business away from our stores. We sell a commodity. You want to touch and feel the fabric. You want to see how it looks on you, especially a suit. It's hard to buy a suit on the internet, although we can tailor it to the measurements you give us online and send it to you. You hear all the time that the internet is going to kill the shopping experience, but it's not. The customer really likes the shopping rising up Throughout this year (2013), we're looking to ramp up the rebranding project in 2014 and 2015. In addition, we're also looking to expand new locations. – David Shotwell, Biscuitville 34 CommerCial ConstruCtion & renovation — January : February 2014 CCR-JanFeb.14_991-.indd 34 2/7/14 2:04 PM
