Publisher Publisher's Page by David Corson Why practice makes perfect A s a lacrosse coach for my son's middle school fall team, I'm always looking for new drills and practice modifcations that can help make the best use of our time on the feld several days a week. So having a plan for how to use one and a half hours of practice before the games on the weekend is crucial to our team's success. At the end of September, I was invited to Georgia Tech to attend a coaches' clinic, which was run by the University of North Carolina coaching staff. Many local coaches attended to learn from one of the game's best coaches, UNC's Joe Breschi. The Tar Heels have been a powerhouse throughout the '80s and '90s, but had fallen off some before Breschi came into the fold to right the ship. This year, the team made an appearance in the Men's NCAA Division I Championship. only to be knocked out in the quarterfnal game by the University of Denver Pioneers, my alma mater. Coach Breschi's presentation went inside his philosophy of choosing quality players. It also featured video clips on how to incorporate offensive and defensive drills into their practices. It was great information. One of the things I walked away with was his discussion on how practice makes perfect. He talked about the staples for bringing your team to the next level. The nuggets included: • "You play the games as you practice." • "Everyone must buy into the system." • "There is no "I" in team." • "Give it your all, as there is always a player waiting in the wings to fll your spot." • "Keep it simple." • "Practice the basics." • "Repetition will lead to perfection when it counts." His words should ring a bell with all of you in the commercial construction sector, as you help guide your new and renovation construction/facility projects. You must have a plan, collaborate with vendors that know how to get the job done and constantly look out for new business relationships that can improve your goal of fnishing your projects on time and under budget. Making it onto an NCAA Division I men's lacrosse team isn't easy. At UNC, they have 30 to 40 players trying to fll 10-12 roster spots each year. Millions of kids play lacrosse in the United States and Canada, so only the best of the best are selected. Character, good grades and athletic talent are the qualifers. If you don't have these, don't bother trying to make the team. The same holds true for your construction projects. There are rosters of core suppliers that help get things done. And there are many other vendors out there waiting for the chance to prove themselves. If given the chance to perform, they'll do their best to showcase their abilities to make your team. Competition is a positive in both business and sports. It breeds excellence.
