eye on retail
The volume of hotel transactions in the United States during
the frst half of 2013, up from
364 a year ago, according to a
recent report by Lodging Econometrics. Of all transactions, 216
were hotels sold within portfolios,
while 334 were individual hotel
transactions. The number of
hotels in portfolios sold year-todate was 400 percent higher
than the same period of 2012.
Retailers will continue to grapple with the increasing impact of internet-based sales on their
"bricks-and-mortar" stores. Successful retailers will be the ones that fgure out how to grasp
the best of both worlds and provide a unifed, brand-consistent customer experience via all
channels. Also, the "service retail" sector
will be greatly impacted by the activation of
the Affordable Care Act, via the estimated
25 million newly insured people coming into
the health care system. As a result, there
will be a signifcant increase in the volume
of in-store clinics, as well as a variety of
new "insurance store" concepts so that
people can have places to go and "shop" for
insurance while getting wellness advice and
products at the same time.
