PUBLISHER'S PAGE The journey continues... By David Corson F our years ago my son started taking Taekwondo. Like all parents, I would attend class and play with my phone while he trained. I decided that life is too short and wanted to do a father-son gig, so I en - rolled in the class, hoping that we might be able to take our Black Belt test together one day. The three-year plan was on schedule – and then I hit a bump in the road. While practicing a jump- side kick a few weeks before last October's Black Belt test, my left knee blew out while I landed after breaking a board. The ver- dict: a torn ACL and MCL. I had surgery last November. 11 months later, after some painful rehabilitation on a newly constructed left knee, I passed my first degree Black Belt test on Sept. 22. I learned much during the training, and apply that knowledge every day. The following are the 9 Taekwondo Life Skills that one should follow: Goals – To want some- thing and be willing to work hard for it. Courtesy – Behave in a way that shows good man- ners and behavior. Loyalty – Be faithful to Commercial Construction & Renovation (ISSN 1559-0534) is published bi-monthly by F&J; Publications, LLC. But the journey does not end when you pass your test. Passing enables you to move on. There is no end to your learning and development. your family, friends and beliefs. Respect – Be considerate and honor yourself and others. Attitude – Feel good about yourself and what you are doing. Perseverance – Never give up, even when you fail. Honor – Keep your promises and earn the respect of others. Self-Control – Take control over the way you behave. Integrity – Do the right thing even when no one is looking. It has been a long road, but I have crossed the fin- ish line. While many pass their tests, some do not. If they don't pass, they must wait six months to test again. It was exhilarating to watch my fellow stu- dents succeed in breaking the boards, and it was hard to watch others with tears leave the gymnasium. But the journey does not end when you pass your test. Passing enables you to move on. There is no end to your learning and devel- opment. In two years, I'll be eligible to take my sec- ond-degree test. There is one thought that has stuck with me. In the be - ginning, the instructor told my son, "The day you don't want to come to class is the day you really need too." That said, we hope to see many of you next year at our Annual Summit, Feb. 26-28, at The Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale, Ariz. Until then, safe travels for the rest of 2012.
